In 2011, I returned from a short-term missions trip to Cordoba, Argentina, passionate about becoming more involved in giving to help share the gospel around the world.
While there, our team had used communication equipment and a van supplied by Speed the Light, a charity focused on supplying missionaries with vehicles and tools for sharing the gospel. Being in high school and only having a part-time job, I knew that I would need to get creative if I wanted to begin giving more.
With little knowledge, experience, and money, I had a batch of 30 t-shirts made the following summer. That first tee featured a photo that my mom had taken of a Green Peace march in Sweden in 1979 and the words “Take Notice, Take Heart” emblazoned across the bottom. Friends and family bought them and the proceeds were given to Speed the Light. After seeing some success after that first run, another round of tees was made and we haven’t stopped since.
Take Heart Apparel Co. began in the most natural way possible. After seeing a need, I saw a way I could help and went for it. The mission came first and will continue to for as long as we exist. Giving is not a side note, but rather an all-encompassing force that drives everything we do. No one who is a part of Team Take Heart is paid, myself included. We do what we do because we’re passionate about seeing the name of Jesus preached and lives transformed. Where some might see just a t-shirt, we see so much more- we see chains of poverty broken in India, missionaries travelling to remote villages that have never heard the name of Jesus, and first responders to a natural disaster who come to not only bring relief to physical need, but also the spiritual.
Lastly, I know that we are small part of a big picture. There are countless ways to get involved and make a difference in the world. With this in mind, I hope that Take Heart Apparel Co. inspires you to do something of your own. Find a need, consider how you can help, and get out there and do it.
Founder – Take Heart Apparel Co.
It was always my dream to own a successful business. I had no intention of doing anything missions related or even ministry related growing up.
At age 15, I had started my first apparel company. It was all I ever wanted to do: make cool t-shirts and live off the profits. My first partner and I were able to find a small amount of success, but after a year and a half, the brand had fallen apart and failed.
As everything I loved about that company was falling apart, my life began moving closer to God. I began to feel my heart grow and push towards missions. These feelings left me confused for quite a while. I found myself asking, “Why do I care about this? God you made a mistake.” I didn’t want to be a missionary. My understanding of God’s plan was lost in a lack of faith.
Many years later, I began to understand that being called to missions did not mean being called to be a missionary abroad. Our God is multifaceted and his idea of missions is also multifaceted. In my last semester of college, I had finally understood that all of my talents and interest were given to me by an all-knowing God. A God that doesn’t seek to make me give up those interests, but to point them in a direction that glorifies Him and maximizes my role in the work He is doing.
This is about the same time that Jesse and Take Heart Apparel Co. came into my life. Jesse had already begun to create something great and worth growing. God had used his willingness to serve and was now pushing me towards doing the same. Although I was hesitant at first because of past experiences, God was giving me another chance to use the interest He gave me to do something meaningful, to do something that could change lives. This is when I took my leap of faith and Jesse and I teamed up to bring Take Heart Apparel Co. to where it is now.
Although we are still small and there is much more work left to do, I hope that Take Heart encourages you in the same way that it has me. This is a company that was created to give back and change lives. All it takes is a little bit of faith and motivation and anything is possible. I truly hope that we can inspire you to go out, do what you were called to do and be a light in this dark world.
